Long-Term Substitute - Lower School Librarian

Calvert School, an independent lower and middle school, has an opening for a temporary Long-term Substitute Librarian. The position will be available mid-March 2026 through mid-May 2026.  Calvert School inspires each child to lead a life of purpose by providing a strong foundation in academic skills and character development. Calvert School is located in Tuscany-Canterbury, a residential neighborhood in Baltimore City, just north of Johns Hopkins University and south of Loyola University Maryland. The campus is easily accessible from Charles Street and I-83. 
 
Substitute teachers play a pivotal role in the overall education of our students. The Librarian will manage the lower school library and will oversee the circulation of all library materials for faculty and students. The Librarian will be responsible for maintaining an inviting setting and will coordinate the ordering and receiving of library resources. 
 
Responsibilities
  • Lead scheduled library classes for Lower School students in Kindergarten through Fourth Grade.
  • Engage students in read-alouds, book discussions, and literacy-based activities.
  • Support students in selecting appropriate reading materials.
  • Maintain library routines, including check-in/check-out and shelving.
  • Manage the March Madness Reading Challenge and Scholastic Book Fair.
  • Ensure a welcoming, safe, and inclusive library environment.
  • Communicate with classroom teachers to support curriculum connections.
  • Follow library procedures and report any issues to administration.
 
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in education or library science.
  • Experience working with children in a school or library setting.
  • Familiarity with children’s literature and age-appropriate reading materials.
  • Strong classroom management and communication skills.
  • Flexibility, reliability, and a student-centered approach.
  • Familiarity with library systems a plus.
  • Previous experience in an independent or Lower School setting strongly preferred.
Schedule and Compensation
  • Compensation is $160.00/day.
  • Work hours typically align with school hours, which are 7:45 A.M. to 3:30 P.M.
