Calvert @ Jemicy

A tale of two halves, this match showed how we look both at our best, and when we're struggling. The first half looked a bit sloppy, as we weren't able to win our 50/50 balls, got caught off sides far too many times, and had trouble connecting passes. The good news was our defense held strong, as Rodgers, Miller, and Borg kept the ball mostly on the opponents half. In the one instance it got past our line, Staley came off her line quickly to beat the opposing striker to the ball and snuff out the attack before it started. Fortunately, it wasn't all bad news. Tucker built off of strong showing Friday and went on a run up the right flank past multiple defending. She made it into the box before the numbers of Jemicy proved too much, but Walton put herself in the right position and found the ball at her feet. With one simple swing of her right boot, she put us on top and gave us a much needed goal.
At the half, we talked about needing to come out with more energy. We did just that, but had a bit of bad luck strike just a minute into it. With a few shots and deflections in our box, we were unlucky to get a hand ball called for a penalty kick. It was the right call, but there was nothing we could do about it. Their striker calmly placed the ball in the bottom left and the game was tied. However, that goal may have been just the wake up call we needed. Not even two minutes after the PK, we were back in front of their goal. Daly put a shot on goal which was saved, but Tucker followed up the shot and slotted it past the keeper to get her much deserved first goal. About 90 seconds later, we followed that up with Staley winning an opposing goal kick and dribbling into close range before finishing it off herself to give us a two goal lead. Then, another 90 seconds after that, Staley picked up a brace and found the back of the net one more time. In the span of 5 minutes, we found ourselves tied, then took back a 3 goal lead. It was quiet for a bit after that, we did score one more time when Walton also got her second on a shot in the bottom corner that the keeper fumbled a bit to let in. From that point on with a 5-1 lead, we simply saw the rest of the match through and were happy to pick up the win. We're back at it tomorrow and we hope we can play our next game the way we played the second half today.
