Game Recap #5

Daryl S. Solee
For our 5th game of the season, our team embarked on a 15-minute drive to face the Dumbarton boys soccer team in what turned out to be another exhilarating match.

Before stepping off the bus, there was a sense that something special was in the air. The cool fall weather invigorated our players, and they brought the intensity we've been working on in training sessions. We challenged the boys to win the first 5 minutes by going after every 50/50 ball, showing physicality, and working together as a team. I'm proud to say they met this challenge head-on, displaying grit and skill.

The first half showcased our boys' abilities with two impressive goals. The first came from some fantastic link-up play between our midfielders and striker, while the second resulted from a brilliant pass by our goalkeeper, perfectly setting up our striker for a well-timed goal. However, in soccer, they say that going up 2-0 can be dangerous, and our opponents managed to score two quick goals to level the game just before halftime.

As the first half ended, our boys seemed disheartened, but this was when the true strength of our team and support system shone through. The Calvert Parents on the sideline were cheering and urging our boys to maintain their intensity, play with physicality, and keep their heads up. They reminded our players that they had what it takes to succeed.

Due to the encouragement from our Parents, the coaches didn't have to do much. After a quick team talk, our boys returned to the field for the second half. They played exceptionally well; even when they fell behind late in the second half with 10 minutes remaining, something magical happened. Our 8th-grade midfielder (TC) won a free kick, placed a perfectly timed cross into the box, and found our 7th-grade midfielder (ZC) for the tying goal. The traveling supporters erupted with cheers as our boys were able to mount a fantastic comeback to tie the game at 4-4.

This game felt like a turning point for our boys. It was as if they had found their identity - one where we support each other, play with class, and exude confidence in our abilities, regardless of the hand we are dealt. The next few games will be challenging as we face strong opponents like Harford Day School, Saint James Academy, and Friends School, all at home, before gearing up for the Boys Soccer BAC tournament hosted at Saint James Academy.

I want to thank our supportive parents for their unwavering care and love for our players' well-being. You set a remarkable example for our team, and we couldn't be more appreciative.
