Game Recap #6

Daryl S. Solee
With a 4:30 PM kickoff, cool 60-degree weather, and a light breeze, the stage was set for a perfect soccer match, our 6th game of the season.

For this game, our young men from Calvert School faced off against a familiar and formidable opponent, the Boys from Harford Day School. Some of you might recall the thrilling match between these two teams. A 2-2 tie that could not be broken even with extra time, sending us into a penalty shootout, with Calvert winning 5-4. That win propelled us to the BAC final, where our boys hoisted the trophy. The returning players and parents still talk about that game. This time, our new players wanted to prove they were ready to participate in this derby and were determined to prove that this year's team was prepared for any challenge.

The game started with incredible intensity, just like our previous match against Dumbarton. Our boys marked their opponents on every play, took quick touches, and created numerous chances in the first half. However, Harford Day's defense held firm and both teams went into halftime leveled at 0-0, even though the Calvert Boys played nearly a perfect half of soccer.

The message was clear at halftime - trust yourselves and play your soccer style. The mental aspect of the game is just as important as the physical, and our boys needed to get out of their heads and just...play. Something clicked as they stepped back onto the field for the second half. They began to visualize passes before they happened, and the unbreakable seal on the goal was shattered.

With twenty minutes left to play in the second half, Calvert School earned a free kick from a Harford Day Foul and could capitalize, heading in a goal from six yards out to beat the Harford Day goalkeeper for Calvert's first goal. From then on, it felt like the game had slowed down for our boys. They could string passes together and began to dominate on both sides of the ball - a coach's dream. Our 7th-grade striker (AM) netted a hat trick, and our 8th-grade captain (CK) found the back of the net again, bringing the game's final score to 4-0 Calvert.

Our defense was relentless, with special shout-outs going to our 8th-grade iron wall, especially (PR), (FM), and (JN). The goals were impressive, but what's even more remarkable is the poise with which our boys played. We've only received one card all season, a yellow for an inadvertent shin guard coming out of a player's sock. It's safe to say that our boys are playing the game correctly.

Let's keep this momentum going, and please continue to support our boys. Thank you for always being there for them!
