Calvert School Hosts Middle School Leadership Summit

The Middle School Leadership Summit Focused on Inclusive Leadership
On February 17th, over one hundred students from area independent schools came together for a leadership summit hosted by Calvert. The day began with an inspirational keynote from City Councilman Leon Pinkett III. Councilman Pinkett connected with the students enthusiastically, and encouraged school cultures that value leaders who are community builders, take risks, and lead with a moral compass. Councilman Pinkett challenged the students to see themselves as leaders for a future Baltimore, a city that needs young people who are stepping up for a better tomorrow.

The day reminded us that as schools we must intentionally create a culture that embraces inclusive leadership. Places where each and every student feels empowered, and where our communities are catalysts for positive change even beyond our campus boundaries.

Student Reflections

“The Leadership Summit was a chance to interact with students from other schools and share ideas on inclusive leadership. Together with the other schools we defined Inclusive Leadership, and identified empathy, collaboration, cultural awareness, and listening as essential parts of this idea.” - Seventh Graders Anna M. & Anna K.

“One of the activities we led was a design-thinking activity to build a cantilever bridge. This activity also gave students from different schools the opportunity to use collective communication to find ways to complete task. Overall, I thought the activity was challenging while it expanded my design thinking and my communication skills.” - Seventh Grader Luke I.

“Student-led workshops from Calvert, Severn, and Maryvale demonstrated how even thirteen and fourteen year olds like us can lead when given the chance. Severn’s workshop talked about empowerment. This activity helped me understand what empowered me and the people around me. Calvert’s workshop was a student-led conversation about empathy. This workshop helped me understand how schools can change to create a more empathetic environment.” - Seventh Grader Shep S.
