Lower School Librarian

Calvert School, an independent lower and middle school, has an opening for a full-time Librarian Teacher for its Lower School for the 2026-27 school year. Calvert School is located in Tuscany-Canterbury, a residential neighborhood in Baltimore City, just north of Johns Hopkins University and south of Loyola University Maryland. The campus is easily accessible from Charles Street and I-83. 
 
The Librarian will be a member of the faculty and will manage the lower school library working with students in Kindergarten through Fourth Grade. Faculty members at Calvert are expected to contribute to the Calvert community as coaches and club advisors and serve on school committees on occasion.
 
Responsibilities will include the following:
  • Create a welcoming, organized, and engaging library environment.
  • Teach reading classes focused on literature appreciation, research skills, and information literacy that are age appropriate.
  • Curate, maintain, and catalog a diverse, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate collection.
  • Promote a love of reading through read-alouds, author visits, summer reading for students, and literacy events.
  • Plan, organize, and lead March Reading Madness and other reading incentive programs.
  • Coordinate and manage Lower School book fairs, including vendor relationships, scheduling, and community engagement.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to support units of study and student projects.
  • Support students in developing responsible and ethical use of information and technology.
  • Manage library systems, circulation, and budgeting.
  • Communicate effectively with faculty, students, and families about library programs and resources.
 
Job qualifications are below:
  • A bachelor’s degree in library information science, elementary education, or related field. A Master’s degree is preferred. 
  • Prior experience teaching lower school-aged students and ability to build positive relationships with students.
  • Strong knowledge of children’s literature and literacy development.
  • Knowledge of educational technology and library management systems.
  • Ability to effectively support and instruct students in information literacy skills, including reading comprehension, research practices, and must be able to inspire and support students.
Calvert School offers a competitive salary and benefits package.  Salaries for teachers are based on years of teaching experience, education, and job-related responsibilities. The salary range for teachers is $50,000 to $70,000 and candidates with additional teaching experience and/or advanced degrees may receive a higher salary. Calvert School offers medical, prescription, dental, vision, life, disability, and retirement plans.
