Calvert Teacher Tapped to Lead NAIS People of Color Conference

Calvert School is proud to announce that Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Timika Tyson has been asked to co-chair the 34th Annual NAIS People of Color Conference (PoCC), the flagship event of the National Association of Independent Schools' commitment to equity and justice in teaching, learning, and organizational development.
“From the first meeting of the 2021 Think Tank and Planning Committee, Timika showed up, sharing her considerable gifts of knowledge, creativity, organization, and collaborative energy in service of the Baltimore independent school community and our industry at large,” NAIS Vice President of Equity and Justice Caroline Blackwell said. “This recognition conveys a measure of the value we place on her contribution to the association and to one of our most meaningful experiences.”

Baltimore was selected to be the host city for this year’s conference. Although the conference will be held virtually, NAIS felt that it was important that the essence of Baltimore be highlighted and felt throughout the programming. Four area independent schools will be showcased, including Calvert School, and each created an overview video for conference attendees.

Ms. Tyson will join three co-chairs to kick off the conference and welcome more than 6,000 attendees. At the conference, Ms. Tyson will introduce Dr. Yuria Celidwen, a keynote speaker and panelist for the Social Justice Summit, and moderate the Q&A panel discussion.

“I am truly honored to serve in this role at the PoCC. The mission of the conference is a righteous one. It provides a space for educators who are doing the work of diversity, equity, and inclusion to exhale for a few days,” Ms. Tyson said. “Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to network with so many like-minded professionals at this conference, and so many have been instrumental in my path as an educator and now as an administrator. Thirteen years, ten years, five years, or even a year ago, I could not imagine being asked for such a distinction. The joy I feel is immeasurable.”
