Finals vs Harford Day

For the 5th year in a row (third time for this coach, but I hear there were two before me) the Calvert girls basketball "A" team are BAC champions! It was a rematch with Harford Day, who gave us one of our better games earlier in the season. This time though, they were prepared and looking for the upset.
We knew this would be a tough game since we were missing Norman, one of our captains and leading scorer. From the start, you knew this would be a low scoring game as Harford Day was looking to limit the possessions, not give anything up in transition, and keep us out of the paint on offense. This worked in the first half, as we went into the break up 9-8. Harford Day stayed in it by shooting 100% from the line and denying those interior buckets we were to used to scoring.
The game turned a bit in the third quarter. After seeing only two players, Schmick and Tobin, score in the first half, we had those two plus Lindsey and Wood get on the board in the third. We put up 9 in the third quarter alone, doubling our point total and in hindsight putting the game out of reach. However, we didn't know that at the time.
In the fourth quarter we knew the game would be won on defense. With a 7 point lead, we good defense could bring us home, and that's what we got. Schmick got us a bucket and Tobin split some late free throws to give us a little breathing room, but smart play on offense and an unrelenting defense brought us home.
Even though we only had seven players see the court this game, this was still a team effort. The bench kept the energy up and the spirits high all game long. Maisy won (unofficial) tournament MVP with her 13 point outburst in the final, almost outscoring Harford Day herself. It was also great to see our four underclassmen not wilt under the pressure of the big game and all put in good minutes in the deciding game. They proved themselves ready to lead the team into the future with their performances.
Overall, it was an amazing season with this group of girls. In my 3 seasons as the A team coach, this was my most dominant team, with their average game being a 31-15 win. We had two players, Norman and Tobin, break the previous all time scoring record. In addition to that, both Norman and Schmick set a new single season scoring record, as both recorded 79 points on the year and 7.2 points per game (also a new high). This group of 8th graders gave us everything we could ask for and will be remembered fondly. Their lasting legacy will be good sportsmanship while dominating the competition, a difficult combo to master! While we'll miss them next year, the team is in good hands with the future classes, lead by our 4 returning players. Good luck in high school 8th graders, and be on the lookout this time next year for Calvert's (hopefully) sixth championship in a row!
