New Solar Array Powers Calvert Campus

Calvert School has completed the installation of a 90.2 kW solar array to Francis J. Carey ’38 Hall, the Middle School building. The installation has been made possible by a generous grant given by the Lockhart Vaughan Foundation, a foundation that aims to promote sustainability and environmental responsibility and help schools reduce their carbon footprint.
The solar array is estimated to produce 112,640 kWh annually and save the school approximately $27,034 in energy costs and solar renewable energy credits (SRECs) each year. This project will not only create significant savings for the School, but it will offset 75 tons of CO2 produced annually, which is the equivalent of planting 423 trees a year or powering Ravens stadium for 56 days.

Our new solar array comes with a digital monitoring system—look for the new lightbulb icon on the homepage! This system will monitor the energy created and consumed in the Middle School building. Our teachers will be able to access this information and use it in our Middle School Science program. It will be a platform for STEM-oriented projects that will utilize real energy statistics to help bring the topic of environmentalism to life.

Additionally, we plan to build on our environmental education program by using the solar array to enhance our Earth Week program and by creating an Energy Conservation Club in the Middle School to help students’ co-educate their peers on environmental issues such as sustainability and renewable energy.

“Calvert is incredibly fortunate to have the support of the Lockhart Vaughan Foundation in the continued ‘greening’ of our campus. The new solar array on the Middle School building will not only provide a sustainable source of energy for Calvert, but it will also enrich our environmental science program in both divisions,” says Head Master Andrew Holmgren.

At Calvert, we are committed to supporting green initiatives that educate our students and teachers about sustainability and environmental responsibility, and we are incredibly thankful to the Lockhart Vaughan Foundation for this opportunity to expand our impact even further.
