Makayla Gilliam-Price ’12 is a typical teenager. She earns good grades in school, is on the debate team, participates in Model UN, and—oh yes—started her own nonprofit organization last year to raise money in order to give back to the community. Moving Girls to Greater Power or MGGP for short (also Makayla’s initials), has a mission of empowering young women.
Makayla explains, “I believe that female empowerment is very important. I can relate to wanting to be a strong, empowered woman, and I have great role models in my life to help me see what a strong woman truly is.”
Makayla began doing small fundraisers as early as seven years old. “I have always volunteered because it was important to me. I would do small fundraisers to raise money for people in need. I knew I was fortunate and wanted to give to others what I was given.”
One of her most recent fundraising projects through MGGP led to the donation of $2,000 to Calvert School during her graduation year. Makayla specifically asked that the money go toward financial aid, saying, “I recognize the significance of education. Calvert gave me a foundation, and I want to help give another student that same opportunity.”
When she isn’t studying for a test or orating on the debate team of Baltimore City High School, Makayla volunteers her time speaking to young girls about female empowerment. “I’m trying to make a difference, just trying to make a change.”
