We Are the Mighty Bees

We are excited to announce Calvert’s new mascot! Inspired by the original yellow-striped Calvert football uniforms, the reference to Calvert as “bumblebees” has been part of Calvert lore for many generations. When the Middle School was built, the fiercer yellow jacket was occasionally substituted for the bumblebee. Now, with the Middle School at full capacity, our athletic program stronger than ever, and Calvert’s identity as a Kindergarten through Eighth Grade school fully established, it is the ideal time to unite the school under one common (or super) mascot – the noble and mighty bee!
As Virgil Hillyer was instrumental in designing many aspects of our school including lockers, pew benches, weathervanes, and chandeliers, Head Master Andrew Holmgren took special interest in this fun project by designing the bee image himself. Over the past six months, many ideas and designs were vetted and discussed. The final design was selected because it best represented Calvert students – honorable, determined, and crafty. The bee’s head and antennae even tie back to one of Mr. Hillyer’s original finial designs – the character affectionately known as the Creeper! Mr. Holmgren even named our new mascot Cecilius and challenged the students to tell him why Cecilius is the perfect name for the Calvert Bee. Do you know why?*

The students had an exciting opportunity to meet Cecilius at a special assembly this morning. Each received a small gift in honor of this occasion. We encourage you to get in on the fun! Stop by the bookstore over the next few weeks as we introduce new Calvert gear featuring Cecilius and the Mighty Bees!
