Lower School Physical Education Teacher

Calvert School, an independent lower and middle school, has an opening for a full-time Physical Education Teacher for its Lower School for the 2026-27 school year. Calvert School is located in Tuscany-Canterbury, a residential neighborhood in Baltimore City, just north of Johns Hopkins University and south of Loyola University Maryland. The campus is easily accessible from Charles Street and I-83. 
 
Physical Education provides all children at Calvert’s lower school with multiple opportunities for physical, mental, emotional, and social growth through active games and structured play. Children learn skills at an age-appropriate pace and gain knowledge about their own physical development. Teachers focus on developing an appreciation for physical activity that will lead to a lifetime of health and wellness. Experience in team and individual sports, as well as movement and rhythms, are designed to help students gain skills and develop positive attitudes towards exercise, sports, and their physical abilities.
 
Calvert School is expanding its Physical Education team and is looking for a full-time teacher to provide physical education instruction for boys and girls in Calvert’s Lower School. The teacher will work with students from Kindergarten through Fourth Grade. The teacher will plan and implement motivational physical education curriculum with the goal of helping students develop competency in the areas of health and wellness, sports, and other physical fitness activities. In addition to teaching, the teacher must coach two seasons of sports throughout the school year. Faculty members are also expected to contribute to the Calvert community as club advisors, serve on school committees on occasion, and actively engage in professional growth experiences.
 
Job qualifications are below:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, or related field. A Master’s degree would be a plus. 
  • Prior experience teaching physical education to elementary-aged students strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of child development principles for early and elementary learners.
  • Strong classroom management skills in active, movement-based environments.
  • Ability to design and implement developmentally appropriate, engaging lesson plans.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student-centered instruction, creating inclusive, engaging learning experiences.
  • Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certification. Calvert will provide, if needed.
  • Willingness and ability to teach outdoors in varying weather conditions throughout the school year.
  • Ability to lift and move equipment and actively participate in demonstrations.
Calvert School offers a competitive salary and benefits package. The salary range for this position is $50,000.00 to $70,000.00, depending on qualifications. Compensation is negotiable and will be commensurate with the candidate’s years of experience, skills, and overall fit for the role.
