Strong Community & Student Success

Building a Strong Community: The Calvert Way

What if your child could be part of a school where meaningful connections and active engagement are at the heart of their learning experience? At Calvert School, a supportive community turns education into a shared journey. Our commitment to building this foundation helps every student feel valued, connected, and ready for success—both in and out of the classroom.

Family Engagement and Events

A strong school community is built on family involvement. Research shows that active family involvement in school activities — such as community events, volunteer opportunities, and parent-teacher meetings — correlates with improved student performance and a more connected school community. By participating in these events, families can engage in their child’s education and become integral members of the Calvert community.

Calvert School hosts various family-oriented events to foster a sense of belonging among families. Our community events, such as Grandparents’ Day, International Week, Bees for BARCS, MLK Jr. Day of Service, Family Bingo Night, and tailgates, bring families together, creating opportunities for meaningful connections and shared experiences.

Parent-Teacher Collaboration

Equally important is the partnership between parents and teachers. Open communication is essential to student success. We make it easy for parents to stay connected and involved in their child’s educational support network through regular touchpoints and events. Some key opportunities include:

  • Parent-Teacher Conferences: Twice a year, parents meet with their child’s homeroom teacher to talk about progress and any areas for growth.
  • BEEtalks: Four meetings each fall bring parents and school leaders together to discuss grade-level topics in a relaxed setting.
  • Back-to-School Nights: Hosted each fall, these events allow parents to explore their child’s classroom, meet teachers, and learn about the curriculum, student expectations, and available opportunities.

Parents are also encouraged to reach out anytime by phone or email and can also contact Heads of School for larger concerns. These regular interactions keep parents informed and help create a team approach to each child’s success.

Student Clubs and Activities

Another vital aspect of community is student engagement. Extracurricular activities boost social skills and improve school experiences. Calvert offers many student clubs and activities, like arts, sports, and academic clubs. These groups help students make friends and feel more connected.

Clubs are so popular in the Lower School that they fill up every semester. To include everyone, we offer three club sessions each year: fall, winter, and spring.

Every Lower School student also gets to perform on stage each year in annual class plays. The Middle School musical and Latin club are particularly well-attended, providing students with creative outlets and opportunities for teamwork.

Real-Life Impact

The impact of our community resonates with everyone involved — parents, teachers, and students alike. They can clearly see how an active and inclusive school environment enhances the educational experience at Calvert.

As one parent shares, “The parent community is incredibly strong and solid. I’ve always felt from day one that I was part of something a lot bigger.”

Francesca P. '19 said, “Calvert isn’t just looking at what you can do in the classroom; they’re looking at every part of your life and making sure you’re having the best life and childhood.”

She adds, “You’re going to be in an environment that supports you, helps you excel, and encourages you to find your passions and yourself.”
