Dedication of the Luetkemeyer Athletic Center

Upon arrival, guests were treated to a breakfast buffet and encouraged to tour the squash courts and observation gallery as well as the artificial indoor turf field. 

Head Master Andrew Holmgren welcomed everyone with the origins of the new athletic center.

“Two years ago, the Calvert community came together to pull-off what, at the time, I called the impossible year. Today, I would like to tell you a story about the impossible building,” he said. 

The “impossible building” was constructed during a pandemic, one of the most challenging moments in Calvert’s history. Despite these challenges and through our partnership with the Luetkemeyers and other donors within our supportive community, Mullen Construction Company, Hord, Coplan, Macht, and Pete Nettleton were able to design and build a state-of-the-art athletic center for our students, faculty, alumni, and friends.

“The Calvert Way isn’t what you do, it is how you do it. It’s about never being outworked; it's about perseverance, problem solving, teamwork, taking care of your community, and above all else, getting the job done and done right,” Mr. Holmgren said.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, Chair Ned Insley thanked Jack and Susie and the other guests for their generosity and dedication to Calvert. 

“The Board felt that, in order to maintain our leadership position and continue providing an outstanding student experience, our athletic facilities had to be equal to our academic reputation,” he said in the remarks. “Thus, the decision was made to construct a premier athletic center to provide our teachers and students with the best facilities to match our extraordinary curriculum.”

After the remarks, guests were invited to watch an exhibition squash match between Director of Squash Patrick Bedore and University of Virginia player and Calvert alumnus Cullen Little ’15 on the new Hopkins Court.
