2022-2023 Fall Sports Recap

From early September to mid-November, our Sixth through Eighth Grade Mighty Bees showcased their competitive spirits, athletic talents, and genuine sportsmanship in an excellent fall sports season. Following the COVID-19 pandemic and completion of the Luetkemeyer Athletic Center, this season marked the return of many home contests and welcomed families and spectators back to campus after a two-year hiatus.

The joyful return also highlighted students’ eagerness to get back on the field, with multiple teams earning high praise and championship appearances as contests progressed.

On the newly reopened Krongard Field, the Calvert football team repeatedly defended its home turf with nail-biting home games against  Boys’ Latin and McDonogh as well as away matches versus Severn and St. Paul’s. The season also featured a scrimmage against Gilman and an October 7 showcase game against St. Paul’s, which drew big crowds and community support as part of the School’s Founders’ Day Festival.

Meanwhile, the Boys’ and Girls’ A soccer teams had standout seasons at home and away, with both earning Baltimore Athletic Conference championship titles.

Leading up to the championships in early November, the girls proved their prowess with impressive 8-4 and 7-1 victories over Garrison Forest and Park, respectively, as well as a 6-0 semi-final win against Odyssey. In the finals, the girls triumphed over Krieger Schechter with a close competition, winning the championship title 2-1.

The boys had a similar season-long journey, with runaway wins against St. Paul’s (7-0), Cathedral (6-1), and Gilman (3-1). They rounded out this year’s competition with a championship win over St. James Academy (4-1) earlier this month.

Inside, the Gold, Black, and White volleyball teams showed their stuff with a jam-packed season, including games during the October 7 Founders’ Day Festival. Notably, the season included victories against RPCS, Bryn Mawr, and Boys’ Latin (Black), a standout win against Concordia Prep (Gold), and an October 4 to October 25 winning streak (White).

The cross country team rounded out its season with a November 7 meet at the Maryland Private School Championship. During this afternoon’s competition, nearly every member of the team improved their times and distinguished themselves in a field of 200 runners. The girls’ team claimed sixth place overall out of 20 teams, and Caroline N. and James L. both finished in the top 20 places of their divisions.

Back on Brown Field this year, the field hockey team logged a series of wins against schools including Harford Day School, RCPS, and St. James Academy before concluding the season with a 4-1 win at home against RCPS.

Finally, the Sixth Grade flag football team maintained wins over Friends and Boys’ Latin this season while balancing a home and away schedule that featured games inside the new Luetkemeyer Athletic Center field house. The season concluded on November 1 with a game against Dumbarton Middle School.

Congratulations to all of Calvert’s student athletes on an exceptional season! We look forward to winter sports beginning in just a few weeks.
