Margaux Trexler '15 Writes her First Book

Margaux Trexler ’15, a junior at McDonogh School, has achieved a great deal in her seventeen years. Being a published author is just one of those accomplishments. “I’ve always dreamed of publishing a book,” said Margaux when asked what inspired her to take on this project.
At first, she tried her hand at writing chapter books, but with each attempt she would quickly think of a new idea and leave her old works abandoned. However, the fall of her freshman year, she and her father met with an English professor at Yale to discuss her creative writing. “He told me the key to successful writing is to write about what you know. That was the moment everything sort of clicked for me, and I realized the most unique story I could offer would be my own.” At that time, Margaux began going through the journals that she had kept since childhood. She read them for inspiration and then began the process of writing short essays based on her life. “I wrote about what I had gone through and what I had learned from those experiences.”

Margaux began compiling essays in October 2015, and her first book, Think about It: A Perspective on the World, Women, and Well-Being from a Fifteen-Year-Old Dreamer, was published in January of 2017. As of today, Margaux has sold about 100 copies of her book. “A lot of people have texted me pictures of them holding my book after they purchased it, and that’s so surreal to me.”

Her favorite part of the process was getting feedback from people who don’t know her personally. Margaux knew their comments would be completely honest. “I’d never really gotten critiques on my writing from anyone other than my family, friends, and teachers, and I’d never shown anyone else my personal works. Receiving a positive response on my writing from other people has been very validating and encouraging.”

Margaux credits Calvert with learning to speak her mind and make her voice heard. “Whether it was in the classroom or giving my Reflection speech, I learned how to be confident in what I am saying, and say it with passion. That is a skill I will keep with me and use for my whole life.”

Calvert is happy to congratulate Margaux on her first published work. We are certain it is the first of many to come. Margaux’s book, Think about It: A Perspective on the World, Women, and Well-Being from a Fifteen-Year-Old Dreamer, can be purchased through Amazon.
