After a disappointing cancellation yesterday, the girls came back to get a decisive 5 goal win today. Without our starting keeper we were still able to keep a clean sheet as well. It was a great overall performance by the defense, including many of our players who are used to playing further up the field.
As for the goals, Sody got us started in the 3rd minute when she got a nice pass from Benitez and put it in the back of the net. She would strike again right before half time, this time using her head after a cross from Hemminger. One thing to keep an eye on here is that was her 14th goal of her career, good for 5th all time. While first place is probably out of reach, she could climb as high as second with a flurry of goals in the playoffs.
Back to this game, we did have one goal scored between Sody's two. Filling took a ball from well outside the box and absolutely ripped a goal above the keeper's head. It must have been coming in fast as the keeper even ducked as it went above her! The second half was mostly about playing people in new positions, but we got two girls their first goals of the season. First, Murphy went on a nice run and scored with a defender on her shoulder. Finally, with just over a minute left to play, McLean got on the score sheet as well with a well placed shot on a break away. Overall, it was a wonderful team effort and positions us well for the playoffs that begin on Tuesday.
