Charles B. Reeves, Jr. ’35 Art Room Dedication

Friends, family, Board members, and Administrators gathered on Friday evening to honor alumnus Charles “Charlie” B. Reeves, Jr. ’35 for his commitment and generosity to Calvert School. Mr. Reeves made a leadership gift to the Building on Strength Campaign and has made provisions in his will to leave his personal art collection to Calvert as a legacy gift. In appreciation of these special gifts, the Middle School Art Room was dedicated to Mr. Reeves.
Mr. Reeves’ impressive art collection features more than 20 paintings from leading Maryland artists including Eugene “Bud” Leake, Raoul Middleman, David Brewster, Henry Coe, and David Cunningham. It is Mr. Reeves’ desire that his art collection be used by Calvert as a teaching collection, and while he will retain his full collection during his lifetime, he plans to share pieces of the collection with the School immediately to be used as part of the Middle School fine arts program.

Local artist, and friend of Mr. Reeves, David Cunningham, will partner with Middle School art teacher, Larisa Kamp, to introduce a unit on landscape painting for Eighth graders beginning this week. Mr. Cunningham is eager to work Calvert students and share his passion for painting while using pieces from Mr. Reeves’ collection as inspiration.

Remarking at the dedication ceremony, Mr. Reeves noted that in recent years, Calvert has been “increasing its emphasis on the visual arts in addition to its three R’s strengths.” His paintings will certainly make a profound impact on the students.

The collection is not only a beautiful gift to Calvert but one that will help the School to further develop our fine arts curriculum. It is our shared hope that this gift will inspire generations of students to appreciate art and realize their own individual artistic potential.
