Anna McAllister '18 Climbs Mount Kilimanjaro

Anna McAllister ‘18 is an adventurer at heart. That was on full display as she climbed Mount Kilimanjaro to cap off a month-long stay in Tanzania this summer. Anna’s five-day climb began in the rainforest and occurred mainly above the clouds. Anna and the group woke at midnight on her final day to start their journey to the summit. “It was harder mentally than physically,” shared Anna.
While certainly a trip highlight, the weeks leading up to the climb were equally as memorable. In collaboration with the Red Sweater Project, Anna spent time at Mugere School, where she worked with high school-age students and helped to dig water lines. Mugere, located in a rural part of Tanzania, is the first high school in the area.

This experience reminded Anna of the Walk for Water during her time at Calvert. The event raised awareness and funds for access to safe water worldwide. “I saw the impact of a program like that first hand,” said Anna. The students Anna met and worked alongside left a lasting impression. “We have so much more in common than we don’t,” she noted.

Anna’s advice to Calvert alumni: “Live in the moment. Have adventures. Try new things.” You never know where it may lead!
