Making Waves: Madison Moore ’13 Champions Marine Life in St. Thomas
From the halls of Calvert School to the crystal waters of the U.S. Virgin Islands, Madison Moore ’13 follows her passion with purpose and a sense of wonder. As the Education and Outreach Coordinator at Coral World Ocean Park in St. Thomas, Madison spends her days leading school groups and guests through the park’s marine exhibits, sparking curiosity, instilling an understanding of ocean life, and inspiring conservation.
After graduating from Coastal Carolina University in 2021 with a B.S. in Marine Science and a minor in Language and Intercultural Studies, Madison’s path to paradise began in guest services at the National Aquarium. She then accepted a six-month internship in the Marine Mammals and Birds Department at Coral World. She fell in love with the work and the island. When the internship ended, she didn’t want to leave!
Madison then became an assistant animal welfare specialist, working hands-on with dolphins, South American sea lions, and tropical birds. Within the year, she was promoted to a Level 1 Trainer, achieving a lifelong dream of working with bottlenose dolphins. “Each of the ten dolphins has a different personality,” Madison says. “Working with them teaches you patience. What gets me is seeing them up close.”
During her time as a trainer, she led interactive programs with visitors, prepped fish in the animal kitchen, and worked closely with a team of animal specialists and veterinarians. In the fall of 2024, she transitioned into her current role as Education and Outreach Coordinator. Madison made this shift because she believes in the power of education. “Everything you can see and can’t see serves a purpose,” she shares. “It’s important to connect with the world around us and respect it.” While her passion for education is strong, she says her heart will always be with animal training.
Outside of her work at the park, Madison has embraced the vibrant culture of St. Thomas. She’s attended Carnival and even participated in a parade. “Getting to be part of all the island has to offer, from the traditions to the food, is one of the greatest gifts,” she says. Her advice for anyone planning a visit or move? “Be ready to fall into the culture.”
Reflecting on her journey, Madison credits her science teachers along the way with sparking her early curiosity and nurturing her love for the natural world. Their influence helped chart the course for a career and a calling!
